Have you read the recent blog post of http://wired-gadget.blogspot.com illustrating that You can get access of many clickbank ebooks using google ,yahoo.

That's what happens when people don't exclude these files with a robots.txt file.

Though if you exclude them with a robots.txt file then you point human visitors straight to your downloads and allow them to steal your stuff that way.

For real protection you should use a download management and security system like www.dlguard.com

I know it costs money, and a lot of people don't like spending money on security, but how many of your products need to be stolen before you've broken even?

Two?

Or maybe only one?

cheers
Sam

Using this simple technique I've hacked many clickbank ebooks but among them the hottest are...

Wheather?

Anyway, do you think this blogger really is not sure whether or not this is an ethical practice?

Well if he spells whether "wheather", then perhaps he really isn't smart enough to know "wheather" or not stealing is right or wrong?

Tell robots.txt to deny search engines to spider the directory your download is in. This assumes your download file and your website files are in different directories. Then change your website preferences to deny viewing access of your direcotries so if the user types in something like example.com/image/ they won't see the list of images you have.

Of course if you really wanted to protect it you could use .htaccess

I wrote a simple forms authentication script to deal with this.

And there are different ways to stop search engines spidering your downloads page. You can use a noindex meta tag without ever entering the filename in your robots.txt

However if your downloads page has been indexed by the search engines then it means you either submitted a sitemap to Google with the downloads page included (this would be very stupid) or more likely there is a link somewhere pointing to the downloads page. This is also pretty dumb if you did it yourself. Or perhaps a customer who actually bought the product linked to it?

I use dlguard, it is great! It automatically enters the buyers email into my email list, calulates affiliate conversions, and makes for a nice secure download.

I wouldn't roll any other way

I wish we could llink directly to the product as I do with Payloadz instead of a thank you page. That would save a lot of this indexing mess

HI Rick,
If you're using DLGuard
you can just provide the product download link just like using payloadz
