Okay so can anyone quote the Clickbank terms and conditions so we can settle this once and for all? Does Clickbank care or not? Is it legal or illegal?

If its not there its legal. Click bank have no problems with it and most vendors don't mind. Sometimes its good contact vendor first and they might provide you with free access to the product.

Unfortunately you can purchase products with your affiliate link with Clickbank. You see, this is taken into account with vendors, thus increasing the price for the average person who wishes to purchase the product. Clickbank supports this since the increase in price of the vendor also increases Clickbank's commission on the vendor's product.

What I usually do is ask the vendor if I may have a copy of the product after I've made three sales. Sometimes the vendor will just send it to me, other times I receive it after making three sales. A few times I don't here from the vendor at all, suggesting poor communication with his/her affiliates. At that time I am glad Clickbank is responsible for paying me and not the vendor.

Personally I doubt that vendors take this approach or that that is a reason for
    ClickBank's support.

For 95% of products (i.e those outside of the IM niche) the
customer probably has no idea what an affiliate is.

Within the IM niche I would think the vendor simply selects the
most appropriate price and does not consider adding more
to offset potential losses such as affiliates purchasing with their own id
    - or say the possibility of refunds.

Rick, your method has you promoting the product before you've actually tried it out, it sounds like.

By actually first purchasing through your own affiliate link you're able to learn the process your potential buyers will be going through, such as upsells or downsells along with ensuring your affiliate information is being passed along properly.

Then you actually have the product you're considering promoting in order to see what the customer receives and can promote on the actual product as a (hopefully) satisfied customer yourself.

The vendor shouldn't object and as Harvey points out, as long as it isn't ABUSED by solely doing it to gain discounts - ClickBank doesn't object either.

I wish it were. I also wish they listened to their vendors better for their return policy. If you're going to sell through them I suggest protecting your product. Many people know about Clickbanks easypeezee return policy and get free products through Clickbank vendors.

Hi. I'm a newbie to affiliate marketing, and in the process of learning so much, I am also finding several affiliate products I would like to buy for myself, either because I personally want or need that product, or in some cases, to test the value of the actual product I'm selling/marketing to others. Is it wrong or deceitful to join affiliate programs for these products, then purchase my own copy through my own affiliate link? I'm not suggesting joining just to buy my own copy, but buying my own copy as a "side benefit" of being affiliate marketer for that product.

    Thanks for reading!

As Harvey mentioned from last year, seems a good idea to contact the vendor and ask their permission to do so, they should be ok with it especially if you are serious about promoting their product.

If they won't give you a review copy then this would be the next best thing.

You wouldn't want to use your CB account soley for the purpose of the net effect being to obtain products at a discount (considering the affiliate fee you would earn) as that would be an abuse of the acct and probably have unfavorable consequences etc.

Keep in mind too that there is a threshold to be met before payout can be made anyway.

    Hope it helps

    Smile

Speaking as a vendor, I can say I've seen people purchase through their own link, and never had a problem with it. I'm not aware of ClickBank ever reversing a sale (of course I only know about my own products) - and I've been a vendor since 1998!

I would point out that the vast majority of customers do NOT purchase that way. but a few do.

When I first started do in affiliate marketing, my first reaction was to use a free link cloaker. Like many others, I was on a tight budget and wanted to save as much money as possible. It did fine for a few weeks until I started noticing some small subtle problems. Eventually these subtle problems became larger ones and I ended up losing a lot of time in the process.

Check out your providers affiliate page conditions. If its not there its lawful. Clickbank have no problems with it and most providers don't mind. Sometimes its good get in touch with source first and they might present you with free having accessibility to product.
