Almost all of my CB products are PDF documents. For the most part, they have worked well. However, from time to time there have been problems downloading/opening documents.

I know it is not just the result of inexperienced purchasers not knowing what to do because I too have had similar problems. My experience has been, that at times, my computer freezes during the download process. I am not sure what the problem is and I am wondering if there are any others with similar experiences.

I am using the most recent version of Acrobat Reader and I have Windows XP. I have dealt with the problem by uninstalling Acrobat Reader and re-installing it. This is a sure fix but takes time.

Does anyone else have better solutions? And, is there an alternative to PDF?

Keep in mind as well, that I am not the most adept at software as Adrian and Harvey will surely attest to.

    Regards,

    Dr. Reena

    Hi there,

PDF is the most used document format on the web. HTML doesn't preserve formatting - it looks different on everyone's screen - but PDF does, and that is why people use it for documents.

There are alternatives to PDF, but they almost all involve your user downloading an additional reader - and few do. Most people have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on their computers anyway. Also, Macs and Linux both have pdf readers installed.

I have noticed that the latest version of Adobe Acrobat (version 6) is really slow on older computers - so I went back to using version 5 on my laptop.

I use .exe files. My eBook is in this format, simply because it allows me to do more. I wrote the whole thing in HTML, then converted it to this format with eBook Edit Pro (http://www.ebookedit.com). This also allows to create your own little browser, with forward and back buttons. The file size is a little bit bigger than a pdf, and the major disadvantage is that it only works in Windows 98 and later. I have interactive bits (with code you can copy straight to your clipboard) so it made sense for me. It did take me a lot longer to produce than a pdf would have.

The only other thing I can think of is that your customers are left-clicking on the download link - not right-clicking, then choosing "Save Target As..."
If you just click on the link as any other hyperlink, Windows starts running it immediately from your server - and stalls if it has a problem. This is exactly what happens when I try to download a .zip - I have to save it first. See if saving it to your My Documents folder first, then running it from there, makes a difference.

    Hope these suggestions help you.

    Best wishes,
    Neil
