    SUPERTIPS EZINE

    Issue 108: August 11, 2005
    Harvey Segal, Editor

    Hello SuperTips readers,

I'm going to have quite a few bizzy days coming up.

And no, that's not a spelling mistake.

All will be explained, together with today's SuperTip.

It started when a colleague asked me how sales of a
    particular product were going.

I told him that I had expected better but put that down to
    the high (though deserved) price.

And then I had a flash of inspiration.

How about a pop-up when the visitor exits without buying
    saying

    ================================================
    WAIT

    CAN'T AFFORD THE PRICE ? . . .

    . . then here's an idea

I'm selling xxxx with the bonus book for ... $97.

    Special offer (limited) -

. . . if you want xxxxx WITHOUT the bonus book

    . . . it's yours for just ... $77

    ================================================

Good idea - but how to code it ?

Well I had used an exit pop-up in the past so I hunted
around for some time in the archives and finally found a
long piece of very untidy code which I painfully adapted
to fit my existing order page.

I wasn't too sure that I'd got it absolutely right or if
this was the version that ran every time or just the
once for a particular visitor, however I finally I got it
    working.

And sent a triumphant mail to my colleague.

"Try it now, visit the page and exit without ordering"

    Back came the discouraging reply.

"Nothing happened, it's the same as before"

    What had gone wrong ?

Well, unfortunately many pop-ups these days are being
blocked by browsers or other software.

    End of story ?

    No.

A few days later my revised pop-up WAS appearing on my
    colleague's desktop.

I had discovered a kind of popup which is almost
    impossible to block.

And how had I inserted the code ?

    With stunning ease.

The discovery came from the site of Michael Hopkins at
BizzyDays.com - which half explains my opening riddle.

Michael has created a new generation of pop-ups and built
them into a very simple-to-use program called Dynamic
    Popup Generator,

    How simple ?

Well I selected the type of pop-up I required and was able
to specify exactly where it should appear and how it would
look. I was able to create the page within the program
itself. Then I ran a preview to see how it would look.

And instead of having to laboriously copy the code into my
order page I just told the program where it was and it was
    inserted for me.

Can it get any better ?

Actually yes. If you don't want this code physically in
your page you can put it in a separate file out of the
way. It's called a .js file but don't worry about that.
    It's all handled for you.

The only thing you then do is add a simple 'onclick'
clause on any link where you don't want the popup to
    occur.

This exit popup was just one of a fascinating range. There
are popups which slide in or out at different speeds,
countdown popups, rotating ones, picture type popups and
    much more.

Did I expect it to be this good ?

    Yes.

I have to admit that my finger was on the purchase button
before I got to the end of the product description page. A
page which is one of the very best I have ever seen not
least for the brilliant use of testimonials.

You will see how Michael has repeated as a headline, and
highlighted in yellow, the best points of each testimonial.

Today's SuperTip - study that page if you want to
    dramatically increase your conversion rate.

    Here it is

    http://www.supertips.com/r/dpg.html

And notice the URL of the page where you arrive.

    It ends with /discount/harvey.htm

Yes - that's a special page Michael set up for me.

You will be getting a discount of almost 50%.

    Can it get better ?

    It can.

Michael is working on the new version 3.0 which will have
    even more features.

And it will be available free to existing owners.

(Tip: order now in case the price rises).

Anyway I am now going to be bizzy going though my sites
adding enhancements such as unblockable slide-in popups,
    delayed popups and the rest.

And rewriting my testimonial pages to look like Michael's at

That is a good idea. And i think it would deffinitly increase conversions for some people. I'm not sure how the search engines deal with pop-ups these days. Do they penialize or give poor rankings to sites/pages with pop-ups.

I did something similar years ago with regular javascript pop-ups and noticed a nice increase in sales.

If somebody left my site without joining i would give them a pop-up telling them they could "GET ACCESS TO THESE 10 GREAT SITES" as well as the original one they were looking at. It was a bit deceptive since it was an AVS site and they would have got access to all the sites anyway but some people dont read the sites sales copy. Unfortunitly i couldn't do the discount thing as i was usually locked into the AVS systems pricing.
